R7038 is a boss in Mother, upgraded from R7037. He is encountered when Ninten and co. stay at a healer's house on Mt. Itoi. After a cutscene in which Ninten and Ana confess their feelings and dance, Teddy walks in and tells them that there are loud noises coming from outside, which initiates a battle with R7038.

R7038 cannot be defeated, and battling it will guarantee death for all party members. However, after the party is defeated, Loid shows up, destroys the robot with a tank and rescues the party members. After the cutscene is over, Teddy is shown to be unable to help Ninten and his friends, at which point Loid rejoins the party.

There is also an upgraded version of R7038 called R7038XX.

Though it seems necessary, this boss can be avoided entirely, simply by bringing Loid up the mountain before recruiting Teddy and obtaining EVE. Players who sequence break will probably be confused by this encounter, as they will not have met R7037.

Trivia

  • There is a typo that can appear during the battle against R7038. If the check command is used during the battle, the statement about R7038 will say, "It there any way to defeat him?" instead of "Is there any way to defeat him?".
  • In Mother 1 + 2 and EB0 the Flea Bag has no effect on R7038, meaning that this was probably a bug in the Famicom version.
  • People have hacked the game to discover that even if you somehow get his HP to 0 he still won't explode in defeat.
