"Queen Mary often has nightmares. As if scolding a naughty child, she cries out, 'I am scared! I am scared!' And then she starts to sing... just a little bit."
Castle Resident

Maria, better known as Queen Mary, is a character in EarthBound Beginnings. She is the wife of George, the great-grandmother of Ninten, the adoptive mother of Giygas, and the queen of Magicant. She and George were abducted from Earth by an alien race in 1906. There, Mary raises one of the aliens, Giygas, while her husband studies PSI without the race's permission; George later escapes back to Earth in 1908 without Mary, who is never seen again.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Once matured, Giygas is tasked by his people to ensure PSI never spreads onto Earth. However, Giygas doesn't want to betray those who raised him, particularly his beloved Maria, and in the end forces himself to detach from Maria, and begin preparations for the aliens' invasion.

During Ninten's visit to Magicant, Maria is revealed to be the true identity of Queen Mary, who suffers from amnesia until Ninten and friends restore her memories by reciting her favorite lullaby, the Eight Melodies. Maria reminisces how while she was under the abduction of an alien race, she would sing the melody to Giygas, whom she raised from infancy and whom she loved like he was her own child. She then realizes that she can now rest in peace with George. The narrative dialogue then reveals that Magicant had actually been an illusion born of Maria's consciousness.

She uses the last of her power to destroy the blockade keeping Ninten from getting to the Mother Ship, but she will also speak to Ninten about Giygas's weakness if the player Checks Giygas during the battle.

Appearance

Queen Mary, despite being the great-grandmother of Ninten, seems to have a very young-looking face, perhaps because her appearance in Magicant is that of her youth. She has olive green eyes, which are teal in the manual. She also has blonde hair and wears a pink crown and dress.

Trivia

  • Assumingly, Maria has had to have had a child with George before they were abducted by Giegue's race in order for them to have a descendant in Ninten. However the game makes no mention of her and his own biological children.
