Ness sleeping in the very beginning of the game before an asteroid wakes him up.
Ness's House is the starting location in EarthBound. It is where Ness lives with his mother, sister Tracy, and his dog King in the town of Onett, Eagleland. Ness's father is not there; instead, a Telephone takes his place and serves to introduce the system of saving and checking both experience and money earned with it. Upon coming back to the house, Ness can talk to his mother and have his entire party healed for free. If Ness is Homesick, he can come back to his house and talk to his mother to cure it.

The very beginning of EarthBound debuts with Ness sleeping in his bed in his pajamas. however, He is awoken by a loud meteor crash nearby. Ness goes to investigate it only to find the Onett police investigating it already alongside Pokey Minch, his Door next neighbor, who asks him to go back to sleep. Upon returning home, Ness is woken up again by a loud knock at the door. Ness's mother asks him to answer it, it he found out it was Pokey returns to tell Ness that Picky, his little brother, wass nowhere to be seen. Both of them search for Picky and find him on the top of the mountain where the meteor is located.
After rescuing him, the meteor's light reveal Buzz Buzz, who informs Ness that he is from the future where the "universal cosmic destroyer", Giygas, dominates the planet. Buzz Buzz senses great potential in Ness and instructs him to embark on a journey to seek out and record the melodies of eight "sanctuaries," unite his own powers with the Earth's and gain the strength required to confront Giygas. However, just before they reach back Pokey's house, a Starman Junior confronts them, who also came from the future to stop Buzz Buzz. The two fight with advanced PSI, but the Starman eventually falls. After this, they enter the house, where Pokey's parents Lardna Minch and Aloysius Minch unjustly discipline the two brothers. Buzz Buzz lands on Lardna's face but she accidentally hits the fly, killing him in the process. Before Buzz Buzz's death, Ness is told about the locations of all Eight Melodies throughout the world and is given a Sound Stone. Ness then leaves Pokey's house, as Onett turns into daytime.

Near the end of the game, Ness and his friends Paula, Jeff, and Poo, return to an invaded nighttime Onett after acquiring all Eight Melodies. Ness's family is sheltered inside their house waiting for the invasion to end. After defeating the invaders, Ness obtains the Meteorite piece and goes back to Saturn Valley to fight Giygas.
After defeating Giygas and saying goodbye to his friends, Ness returns back to his home. He shows his mother all the photos he has acquired throughout his journey and the credits roll. After the ending credits, Picky Minch comes to Ness's house in the middle of the night and gives him a letter from Pokey that says "Come and get me loser. Spankety, spankety, spankety!", and the game ends with him and Ness pondering what has become of him.
