The Gutsy Bat is considered Ness' best weapon in EarthBound. It raises his Offense by 100 and Guts by 127, making it the third strongest overall of Ness' weapons, behind the Legendary Bat and the Casey Bat. This weapon differs from other bats with its high SMAAAASH!! rate, making it incredibly strong. It can only be obtained by being dropped by Bionic Kraken in the Cave of the Past, with a 1/128 chance.

A game tip seen on Page 112 of the EarthBound Player's Guide on how to win the Gutsy Bat. Despite featuring an image of a developer owning the Gutsy Bat in the Sea of Eden, this isn't solid proof of Krakens being able to drop the item.
In EarthBound Player's Guide, a tip in the Sea of Eden section of the guide mentions that the Krakens found there have a 1/128 chance of dropping the Gutsy Bat. It is also vaguely noted that due to their item drop, the Krakens found in the Sea of Eden are different than the Kraken fought when traveling to Scaraba. The tip also features an image of the game's developers having the Bat in Ness' inventory during the area. However, it is impossible to win the Gutsy Bat from the three Krakens, as the true enemy capable of dropping the Gutsy Bat are the Bionic Krakens found in the Cave of the Past.
It is believed that the image showing Ness' inventory was most likely a beta version of the game, making the Player's Guide's tip on the Gutsy Bat inaccurate when the game was officially released.
