"Aahh, Doorknob! I mean, Flint!"
Thomas, Mother 3

The doorknob is a recurring joke found in Mother 3. It makes its first appearance in Chapter 1; when Thomas is trying to summon Flint, he accidentally yanks off the knob to his front door. It is then tossed and ends up lost, though a new doorknob takes its place. The doorknob then travels around the game's world as the story progresses, usually in some funny way. The Player will have to do a lot of exploring to find it in every chapter, however. It can also be found at the "End" screen as an item.

Chapter 1[]

As Thomas is trying to open Flint's locked door, he yanks the doorknob and it ends up coming loose. Thomas gazes at the broken item as Flint opens the door. Surprised, Thomas throws the doorknob away and comically calls Flint "Doorknob", before correcting himself. The flung doorknob knocks on the top of Boney's doghouse, startling him. It then ends up behind a wall, not being seen again until the next chapter.

Chapter 3[]

While heading to Osohe Castle, Salsa finds the doorknob in Nippolyte's "Potatoto" patch. Fassad immediately takes it from him and throws it into the nearby river, telling him "not to pick up cheap, doorknob-ish things".

Chapter 4[]

An NPC in the jail in Tazmily Village tells the party that he was arrested for stealing a doorknob, while proclaiming all he did was pick it up.

Chapter 7[]

At the beginning of the chapter, an NPC tells the party that he found a doorknob the other day, but he was frustrated at the time, so he threw it far to the east, dislocating his shoulder. He also mentions a gut feeling that Thomas's fingerprints were on the knob.

Chapter 8[]

Inside the lobby floor of the Empire Porky Building, a Pigmask Captain claims he discovered a doorknob in the Clayman Factory, but, like the NPC in Chapter 7, threw it as far away as he could out of irritation.

The party can encounter the doorknob itself underneath New Pork City, but they accidentally knock it off a nearby ledge while trying to pick it up.

Ending[]

The player themselves comes across the doorknob during the game's ending, accidentally walking into while navigating the end screen. The player picks up the doorknob and puts it in their inventory, finally obtaining it once and for all.

The doorknob is the final game element to appear in the cast roll following the end screen, showing up at the very end.
