A Chicken is an item in EarthBound and Mother 3. It can be obtained if a character has a Fresh Egg in their inventory and waits. The egg will eventually hatch into a Chick, which will then grow into a Chicken. A Chicken will periodically make clucking noises when in a character's inventory, although it sounds more like a beep in EarthBound.

EarthBound[]

Chickens will flee from the character's inventory if the player tries to use them. Their real use is to be sold for money. They sell for $110, significantly more than what a Fresh Egg costs, $12, which makes them an easy way to obtain money early in the game, earning $98 in profit with each egg. Even more effective in Happy Happy Village prior to defeating Mr. Carpainter. A self-service food stand that allows one to "pay as much as [they] want" including nothing, sells Fresh Eggs, the only downside being having to fight an Unassuming Local Guy. After defeating Carpainter, the stand will go out of business due to "personal reasons", those being that Pokey stole all the food from it.

Mother 3[]

Chickens work as they do in EarthBound; they will "dash off at breakneck speed!" if used from the inventory, and sell for a profit. But this time not only do they sell for 200 DP, but unlimited amounts of free Fresh Eggs can be obtained from Chapter 4 onward as opposed to a short window, via a chicken in Murasaki Forest by the Chimera Laboratory. If the player bathes in a Hot Spring with a Fresh Egg, the egg will transform into a Hot Spring Egg which heals 100 HP, more than a Fresh Egg's 80, but a Hot Spring Egg won't turn into a Chick or with that, Chicken. Chickens also appear as NPCs at Alec's house in the prologue and Chapter 1.
